About Us
Built by people who've faced the bottleneck firsthand.
Founded in 2023, StrainX Works puts generative AI in the hands of industrial fermentation teams.
Our Story
Strain development's bottleneck is a design issue as much as a biology issue.
Industrial fermentation depends on optimized microbial strains. Moving from an initial concept to production-viable performance consumes much of a fermentation R&D team's time and resources. The biology is not necessarily intractable. The problem is that the design process lacks systematic structure. You run screens, review results, choose the next step, and repeat for months or years.
The founding team at StrainX Works spent years close to this process. Akshay built sequence-based tools for fermentation R&D and repeatedly encountered the same limitation: sequence-analysis tools were disconnected from the metabolic constraints that determine whether a modification can improve production. Tobias developed graph neural network models for metabolic pathway prediction and saw research methods move far ahead of their industrial application. Priya worked through strain development cycles for fermented specialty ingredients and saw firsthand how much lab capacity is lost to unproductive iteration loops.
StrainX Works was created to bridge that gap. The platform maps your organism's metabolic network, produces ranked strain-modification candidates from predicted flux outcomes, and learns from lab validation to improve every subsequent cycle. It is not meant to replace your scientific team. It provides a systematic design layer, replacing guesswork with predictions they can assess and use.
We are an early-stage company with 4 pilot partners using the platform, an angel round closed in mid-2025, and a team committed to making this work for industrial fermentation teams at the bench, not only on benchmarks.
Our team.
Background in computational biology and sequence-based optimization for fermentation R&D. Co-founded StrainX Works after years spent building tools across genomic data and industrial strain performance, and seeing their disconnect from the metabolic constraints that mattered most in production.
Developed ML systems for biological sequence data before co-founding StrainX Works. Deep experience with graph neural network architectures for metabolic pathway prediction and genome-scale model integration. Focused on applying learned metabolic-network representations to practical strain design, rather than only publishable benchmarks.
Background in industrial fermentation science and microbial physiology. Experience developing processes for fermented specialty ingredients at commercial scale, focused on non-model organism behavior in production settings and the difference between lab-scale models and actual fermenter performance.
Develops upstream processes and scales bioreactors from lab to pilot. Converts computational strain candidates into practical fermentation protocols and works with early-access partners during lab validation in the iteration cycle. Experienced in strain characterization and bioprocess parameter optimization.
Funding
Angel-funded, early-stage.
Angel round closed July 2025. Backed by a small group of investors with backgrounds in industrial biotechnology and fermentation ingredients manufacturing. Funding supports platform development, pilot partner onboarding, and scientific team growth through 2026.
We are not pursuing a Series A at present. At this stage, we are focused on showing clear, measurable gains in iteration speed for pilot partners before scaling commercialization.

Based at Genome Valley, Hyderabad.
Genome Valley is India's dedicated life sciences and biotechnology cluster, with fermentation manufacturers, pharmaceutical producers, and biotech R&D operations. Its location gives us direct access to the industrial fermentation teams and biomanufacturing infrastructure our platform serves.
Hyderabad's concentration of fermentation industry, research infrastructure, and talent makes it a practical base for a platform requiring close collaboration with production-scale fermentation operations. Our early-access partners are distributed across India and Southeast Asia, and remote onboarding is available.
